Aunt Nen gave me my first taste of ginger beer when I was a child staying at her home in Nottingham. I thought my head was going to explode this was not your ordinary ginger beer it had that authentic Jamaican kick. I have been hooked ever since and never lost the longing for that taste.
Our Jamaican heritage has been a key part of developing our brand Root2Ginger. We have wanted to do more than make drinks we wanted to evoke memories and maintain tradition.
Aunt Nen had a typical Caribbean home where the kitchen never stopped something was always cooking, baking, boiling or marinating and the smells were amazing. She was the first person I saw make ginger beer when I was just 5 years old. She saved glass Ribena bottles and recycled them, and everyone got involved in the weekend event. Hours were spent grating ginger at her large dining table which was the hub of the house. Bottles of this wonderful brew were placed outside in the garage and left to ferment and it was not unusual for a few tops to blow off.
It fills me with joy to carry on this tradition and continue to develop Root2Ginger with my family.
